Message from the Chair of ICE Health and Safety Expert panel

Margaret Sackey, CEng MICE, PgC, CMIOSH, FMAPS, MIIAI, ICE H&S Register (A) Chair, ICE Health and Safety Expert Panel

'Here at the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), we are committed to being at the forefront of knowledge transfer. This includes setting the standards, influencing policy makers and regulators, and challenging the status quo, with a view to identifying and promoting best practice.

ICE develops training and other knowledge transfer opportunities to stimulate industry engagement and meet these objectives. As professionals, we understand that health and safety risk management is a fundamental responsibility of all of us, regardless of our roles as clients, designers or contractors. It is one that if not fully complied with, can leadto serious injury, death and subsequent prosecution.

The acquisition of health and safety knowledge and experience is a lifelong journey and we have opportunities at every stage of this journey to consolidate our knowledge further.

The Health and Safety expert panel, along with ICE Training, have developed a suite of courses that examine the changes to the CDM Regulations and how this will affect health and safety practices in the workplace.

The Health and Safety expert panel works closely with a range of stakeholders, including the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), to ensure our voice is heard. We also have the Health and Safety Register, which is an opportunity for you to show that you have the demonstrated the clearly defined standards of health and safety competence, beyond that required for professional membership. This offers clients assurance that your knowledge has been verified by a leading professional body.

If you are working towards your professional review, you can demonstrate your expertise inthis key attribute through attending an ICE Training classroom course or by downloading an eLearning module.'
