Coronavirus Highlights Need for Remote Site Working

Construction is one of the physical industries likely to be heavily hit by the effects of the virus on employee availability, with sites suffering lack of workforce.

Technologists are claiming this week that remote working of construction sites is becoming increasing viable and could be an antidote to the likes of Covid-19. Development of digital technologies could help the sector deal with pandemics and other employment-damaging events.

Historically the industry has not had the attention of digital entrepreneurs. This is changing. Technology company Sensat has developed Mapp, a digital means of interacting with and remotely facilitating construction activity. It has enormous potential, according to its creator.

“For the first time technology can get hands on with the real world,” said Sensat chief executive James Dean.

“Construction is one of the industries that technology companies have neglected, because workplaces are so physical. No-one has ever built technology for it.”

In the past, technologists have tackled the office-based part of construction because they could get to grips with this. “But 90% of building a road, for example, is physical work – that’s more difficult,” Dean said.

Mapp produces live digital twins – virtual replicas of the physical world – and provide means that could transform the way physical industries operate.
