Description

Delivered over two days this training course uses notes, presentations, tutorials and delegate discussion to address the key geotechnical and structural criteria for the design of a range of foundation types commonly used for building and civil engineering structures. The emphasis is on the development of practical solutions to design problems, working to current design codes and standards. 

The geotechnical notes and presentations deal with:

  • Ground investigations
  • Bearing capacity and settlement in spread foundations
  • The geotechnical design of piles and pile groups
  • The determination of earth pressures on retaining structures

The structural notes and presentations deal with:

  • The conceptual and detailed design of spread foundations for simple and complex loading
  • The design of piled foundations including pile layouts, pile cap and ground beam systems
  • The design of reinforced concrete mass and gravity walls and embedded walls in concrete and steel

The notes also include a brief introduction to Eurocodes and their application to foundation design.

Formats

Classroom

Training courses on set dates, in ICE Training venues across the country. Suitable for those looking to attend a training course and share knowledge and practical experiences with like-minded others in an interactive learning environment.

In-house

Bespoke training programmes. These are delivered by our tutors at a time, in a location and based on a curriculum completely tailored to your needs. Ideal for organisations that have several employees wishing to take training in the same subject area, and/or have organisation-specific ideas for learning and development.

Programme overview

Sessions begin at 9:00 and finish at 17:00. Morning and afternoon coffee breaks and lunch are included in the programme.

Tutors

Bob Benton 
BSc(Eng) CEng MiStructE

Bob is a senior project engineer working on the design of building and civil engineering structures in the Highways and Transportation Department of a Utility Authority. He is responsible for the day to day management of a wide range of projects, and in recent years, has specialised in projects which involve a high level of technical complexity. He regularly works with other consultants and contractors. He also works as a part-time lecturer, teaching whole units on HND/Degree courses, teaching on professional examination, preparation courses and as a contributor to seminars on structural design.
