This one day training course considers common design challenges and identifies the key engineering questions, developing methodologies to ensure you get the right information, make the right design decisions and produce effective and efficient engineering solutions across your projects.

Taking a pragmatic approach, supported by the lessons learnt from real-life case studies, this training course answers the queries most pertinent to the non-geotechnical specialist:
  • What are the most common causes of error, dispute and delay in geotechnical design?
  • How to ensure you get the design data you need.
  • What does site investigation data tell us and not tell us?
  • When to use a geotechnical specialist.
This training course has been carefully developed to provide clarity and confidence to civil and structural engineers when making geotechnical decisions. It gives clear guidance on getting good geotechnical data appropriate to your design, understanding the balance between risk, cost and certainty and how to avoid the most common causes of time and cost overruns on your projects.

Training courses on set dates, in ICE Training venues across the country. Suitable for those looking to attend a training course and share knowledge and practical experiences with like-minded others in an interactive learning environment.

Bespoke training programmes. These are delivered by our tutors at a time, in a location and based on a curriculum completely tailored to your needs. Ideal for organisations that have several employees wishing to take training in the same subject area, and/or have organisation-specific ideas for learning and development.

Dr Kieran Dineen
BEng (Hons) MSc DIC PhD
Kieran is the commercial and technical director of a specialist geotechnical practice providing contracting and consulting services across the construction industry. He spent 10 years of his career at Imperial College undertaking research into ground engineering, which led directly to the setting up of a spin-out company in 2000. He has particular expertise in geotechnical design and construction as well as wider experience across civil engineering infrastructure. He has also acted as an expert witness on a number of ground engineering related problems.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course delegates should know:
  • The importance of getting good geotechnical data
  • How to identify the key parameters for particular designs
  • The particular design challenges that cause most problems in practice
  • A methodical approach to ensuring the right information is available for design
  • The balance between risk, certainty and cost in geotechnics
Who Should Attend?

This training course is ideal for:

  • Civil engineers
  • Structural engineers
  • Anyone who undertakes routine geotechnical design or specifies and utilises geotechnical data in their designs
