Your Details

Management of Design requires the technical and practical application of Engineering as one of its founding principles. However, successful management of the design process requires the application of all the attributes of a Chartered Civil Engineer.

Arguably, when the design process is managed well, the management of design goes unnoticed, but the reverse is also true - when the design is not managed well the ramifications are far reaching and expensive, both in terms of cost and programme. In today’s construction industry, good design management is the key to a successful project and the decisions of the design manger can make or break a project.

This comprehensive two-day course seeks to identify and resolve the key challenges in the management of the design process, both in infrastructure and building design, exploring established approaches and innovative practices.

The course is structured around Design Timeline and considers the different design management requirements for Concept Design, Options Evaluation, Detailed Design, Design Delivery and Handback. Consideration is given to the implications of CDM 2015, the effect of Digital Construction and current BIM Protocols.

Each Session is conducted in a relaxed participative format, which recognises and utilises what the participants already know as well as providing them with many new ideas, techniques and practices. Working Group exercises are used to stimulate the participants to explore specific issues and draw from their own experience, providing valuable knowledge to be shared with each other under the expert guidance of the tutor(s).

Bespoke training programmes. These are delivered by our tutors at a time, in a location and based on a curriculum completely tailored to your needs. Ideal for organisations that have several employees wishing to take training in the same subject area, and/or have organisation-specific ideas for learning and development.

Programme Overview
This training course starts at 09:00 and finishes at 17:00 with refreshment breaks mid-morning and afternoon, plus lunch.
All timings, except the start time, are approximate and may be adjusted to suit natural breaks in the lesson.

The tutors are chartered civil engineers and have extensive experience of the design process in industry. They have wide ranging experience on design management processes and their application in practice.
Stephen Dellow
Vice Chair for Informing Opinion, ICE South East England, Member Of Council & Director, Markides Associates
Stephen is currently a Director working for Markides Associates, heading up their Civils Department in Waterloo. He also has extensive experience overseas predominantly within the Middle East. His career spans 30 years’ experience working mainly in the field of highways, transportation, drainage and infrastructure services working for a variety of Private and Public Sector clients. He is responsible for training Markides’ Graduates as well as being a Registered Mentor, an ICE Reviewer and Auditor. He is promoting the public perception of the Civil Engineer within his role as Vice Chair on the regional committee and aims to get as many ‘This is Civil Engineering’ banners across projects and sites within the Region as possible. He is also campaigning for an increased membership of Engtech’s within his organisation having successfully just organised his 3rd sitting of Workplace Reviews. He is also working on projects to promote ICE200 throughout 2018 – please speak to me to get involved.
Wendy Gillies
Engineering Manager and Lead CEM for the CP5 SMFF

A highly experienced and motivated CEM with over 20 years’ experience of major civil engineering projects and site management of major infrastructure schemes, Wendy has proven capability in end-to-end delivery of multi-discipline projects and programmes.

Wendy facilitates delivery and optimises potential and performance. She resolves any project performance issues through the development and implementation of improvement strategies. She is an advocate for staff development and is currently Supervising Civil Engineer (SCE) heading up professional training for the Framework team.

She is a highly respected engineer, an ICE Experienced Reviewer, ICE panel member and also chaired the steering group for the revised ICE Professional Review Report.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this course, delegates should:

  • Appreciate established and innovative practices in design management
  • Be able to identify common design management ‘challenges’
  • Be able to develop individual/organisational design management tools
