This one day training course has been specifically designed to give you the ability to prepare a straightforward tank design that will satisfy the requirements of EC2 and CIRIA C660. It is ideal for graduate engineers who have already gained some reinforced concrete design skills and more experienced engineers who are making the change from BS8007 to EC2.

During the training course you will learn about the key aspects of tank design:

  • Structural analysis - Learn how to design a tank from the use of simple charts and tables to grillage and finite element computer analysis
  • Thermal and shrinkage - Gain an understanding of how to use CIRIA C660 and how these factors control the design
  • Flexural and tensile crack control - Learn how to use charts and a spreadsheet to calculate the reinforcement required to control these effects

The course is highly interactive with presentations, discussion and practical tutorials throughout the day. Many of these are demonstrated by using an Excel based design tool created by the course tutor. A copy of the spreadsheet tool, and a free 3 month license for its use, are provided for every attending delegate.*
*To use the tool beyond the 3 month free period, delegates will need to purchase an annual license for this tool which is available, directly from the course tutor, at a discounted price.

Training courses on set dates, in ICE Training venues across the country. Suitable for those looking to attend a training course and share knowledge and practical experiences with like-minded others in an interactive learning environment.

Bespoke training programmes. These are delivered by our tutors at a time, in a location and based on a curriculum completely tailored to your needs. Ideal for organisations that have several employees wishing to take training in the same subject area, and/or have organisation-specific ideas for learning and development.

Programme Overview

Sessions begin at 9:00 and finish at 17:00. Morning and afternoon coffee breaks and lunch are included in the programme.

Session 1 -
Overview of design criteria
Session 2 - Introduction to tank design
Session 3 - Analysis of tanks
Session 4 - Design forces and moments
Session 5 - Thermal, shrinkage and cracking considerations
Session 6 - Design of reinforcement
Session 7 - Advanced calculation and design aids

Robin Atkinson
Robin has extensive experience with contracts and consultants working on a broad range of projects from simple to complex structures for clients drawn from private and public sectors. He is an industry expert in the design and analysis of liquid retaining structures and has detailed knowledge of British and European design standards and current best practice guidance. He has developed sophisticated but practical techniques for analysing and calculating the reinforcement for these structures. His interactive software driven tools and design aids simplify the analysis and understanding of the behaviour of liquid retaining and conventional structures.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this course delegates should understand:
  • How to prepare a straightforward tank analysis and specify the reinforcement requirements for a tank
  • The structural behaviour of tanks
  • How thermal and shrinkage effects control the design
  • How flexural and tensile crack equations are derived and used
  • How cracks affect the life of the structure
  • The difference between ultimate limit and serviceability limit state design
  • The cost constraints of design
  • The risks and factors of safety
Who Should Attend?

This training course has been specifically developed to suit:

  • Graduate civil engineers
  • Graduate structural engineers
  • Experienced engineers converting to EC2 design
