Ever increasing traffic congestion and budgetary pressures make it essential for those involved with Motorways, Trunk Roads and Local Authority roads to fully understand the causes of maintenance problems in order to remedy them most effectively.

This one day training course illustrates a wide range of problems and examines the strengths and limitations of various maintenance and renewal processes as possible solutions. Group exercises then enable delegates to practice dealing with real problems without incurring financial penalty.

The course is highly interactive and includes presentations, notes, tutorial exercises, case studies and delegate discussion to ensure effective learning outcomes.

Bespoke training programmes. These are delivered by our tutors at a time, in a location and based on a curriculum completely tailored to your needs. Programme Overview
This training course starts at 09:00 and finishes at 17:00 with refreshment breaks mid-morning and afternoon, plus lunch. All timings, except the start time, are approximate and may be adjusted to suit natural breaks in the lesson.
  • Session 1 - Introduction inc BS's, Sector Schemes and SHW. Basic asphalt technology and why roads fail. Problems in surface courses and in other layers and likely causes including poor drainage and sub-standard reinstatements etc.
  • Session 2 - Surface treatments, where to use each type, pros and cons and what to watch for. BS's and National Sector schemes etc. Cyclic, planned and reactive maintenance
  • Session 3 - New surface course asphalts, including thin surfacings, cold ultra this surfaces, and SMA's, what to use where, when to use modified bitumens. BS594987, Sector Scheme 16. What can go wrong on site. Quiet surfaces
  • Session 4 - Binder course options and problems
  • Session 5 - In-situ and ex-situ recycling and use of RAP in new asphalts. Dealing with Tar
  • Session 6 - Surface texture, skidding resistance, High friction surfacing and retexturing
  • Session 7 - Hand lay work and patching inc. Sector Scheme 23
  • Session 8 - Group exercises
  • Session 9 - Winding-up session
Mr Jeff Farrington 

A member of the ICE, Jeff has more than 40 years' experience in the design and construction of large and small highway construction and maintenance works. He is the author of numerous technical papers and has contributed to several text books. He is a member of the British Standards Asphalt Committee, B510/1 which he chaired for 20 years, and he has served on several other national and international committees dealing with asphalts and flexible pavements.
Learning Objectives
On completion, delegates will be have a good grounding in basic asphalt technology and be aware of the relevant UK guidance documents. They will also know:
  • Why roads fail, especially surface courses, looking at many real life examples including reflective cracking
  • How surface course failure can cause premature failures of binder course, base and even the road foundation
  • The life cycle of surfaces and cyclic, planned and reactive maintenance work
  • Conventional surface treatments, cold ultra this surface courses, their pros and cons, plus other ways of arresting surface course deterioration. What can go wrong on sites and why
  • New surface courses asphalts, not one type is best everywhere so what to use where. Recognising poor site practices which detract from their maximum durability. Quiet surfaces
  • Binder course options, guidance and problems
  • Recycling including in-situ, ex-situ works, retread (on minor roads) and use of asphalt planings (RAP) in new asphalts
  • Maintaining skidding resistance and high friction surfaces
  • Hand-lay work and patching
